Empowering Africa’s Tomorrow

Who we are

Promise of Africa is a youth-focused organisation dedicated to empowering children and young people of African heritage to grow with identity, confidence, cultural pride, practical skills, emotional resilience and a strong sense of belonging.

We create safe, inclusive and inspiring spaces where young people can discover who they are, understand where they come from, build meaningful relationships, learn practical skills and experience the richness and diversity of Africa for themselves.

We bring Africa to our children and youth – and take our children and youth to Africa – so they can grow grounded, confident and whole.

Our mission

To empower African children and young people for a greater tomorrow by nurturing identity, confidence, wellbeing, skills and a strong sense of belonging through culture, education, community connection and service.

Our vision

A future where African children and young people are confident in who they are, connected to their heritage, respectful of diversity, emotionally resilient, equipped with practical skills and empowered to thrive wherever they live in the world.

A continent of possibility

Why Africa. Why now.

Africa is more than a place on a map. For millions of young people of African heritage living across the diaspora, it is part of their inheritance, identity, history and story. Yet many grow up knowing the continent primarily through family stories, food, music, social media or occasional visits.

Promise of Africa believes geographical distance should not create cultural distance. Young people should have the opportunity to know Africa as a living, diverse and evolving continent – and to see themselves as participants in its future, wherever they live.

  • A young continent

Africa’s young people are central to the continent’s social, cultural, technological and economic future.

  • A creative continent

Across music, film, fashion, enterprise, technology and social innovation, African creativity is influencing the world.

  • A connected future

Diaspora youth can become bridges for knowledge, friendship, investment, service, innovation and cultural exchange.

Africa is not simply our history. It can also be part of our future.

Connecting young people to their birthright

Birthright, for Promise of Africa, means the right to know, explore and build a meaningful relationship with the cultures, histories, languages, communities and possibilities that form part of a young person’s African story. It is not about prescribing one identity; it is about creating room for discovery, pride, curiosity and belonging.

Identity, adolescence and belonging

The challenge we are addressing

Young people today are navigating adolescence in a world shaped by social media, migration, multicultural families, changing social norms and intense peer pressure. For many young people of African heritage, this can include the additional challenge of navigating multiple cultural identities without safe spaces to explore what those identities mean.

  • Limited opportunities to learn African history, languages and cultural practices in structured, positive and contemporary ways.
  • Social isolation and peer networks that may exist primarily online rather than through healthy, supportive community relationships.
  • Identity confusion, low confidence and emotional withdrawal, particularly during adolescence and early adulthood.
  • Mental-health and emotional-wellbeing concerns that may remain unspoken, misunderstood or under-supported.
  • Exposure to alcohol, drugs, vaping and other risky behaviours, combined with peer pressure and limited access to positive alternatives.
  • A growing gap between young people, their families, their heritage and the wider African continent.

Culture creates connection. Connection creates belonging. Belonging builds confidence and resilience.
